The Four Pillars at Home

Identity, self-compassion, forgiveness, and grace — the ground every healthy relationship stands on.

Pillar One
Identity

Who a child comes to believe they are — shaped by what we notice out loud.

Try this at home — “Catch them being”

Once a day, name one true thing you saw them be, not just what they achieved. Praise the person, not only the grade.

Say: “I noticed how patient you were with your brother today.”
Pillar Two
Self-Compassion

How a child learns to speak to themselves when things go wrong.

Try this at home — “Flip the critic”

When the harsh voice shows up, help them talk to themselves like a friend. Model it on your own slip-ups, out loud.

They say “I’m so stupid.” → “You made a mistake — that’s being human. What can you learn?”
Pillar Three
Forgiveness

Moving past mistakes to make room for growth — theirs and yours.

Try this at home — “The redo”

Walk the four repair steps together: own it · name the impact · make it right · reset. Share a mistake of your own first.

Try a “mistake of the week” at dinner — you go first. It makes repair normal, not scary.
Pillar Four
Grace

Meeting a child with understanding rather than only judgment.

Try this at home — “Connection before correction”

Before the lecture, take one calm breath and ask one kind question. Your calm is the intervention.

Say: “Looks like a rough one. Tell me what happened.”
